Putting on five showings of its brand new production, Shen Yun brings 5,000 years of Chinese history to life through classical Chinese dance and music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based in New York since 2006, Shen Yun Performing Arts tours the world with traditional Chinese performances like folk dance and story-based dance, along with solo performers. Shen Yun means \u201cthe beauty of divine beings dancing.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The show includes about 20 pieces, from dance and acrobatics to classical music and singing, along with dazzling backdrops and costumes. It celebrates the cultural heritage of China over the last several thousand years, including retellings of legends and the stories of dynasties, along with Buddhist and Taoist spirituality and values.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shen Yun tours over 150 cities throughout the world each year. It plays two evening shows and three matinees in Boston this December, and tickets are currently on sale at Ticketmaster starting at $90.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"m-block m-generic-cta\n\t refurbished City Hall Plaza. Programming like live music starts at noon on Sunday, Dec. 31, and continues through 12:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 1, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While centrally located around City Hall Plaza, other programming will take place on Boston Common and at a handful of indoor performance venues, too. The event\u2019s signature ice sculptures will be placed throughout City Hall Plaza and the Common in the afternoon of the 31st, and will light up at night.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The parade also returns this year, proceeding from City Hall Plaza to Boston Common at 6 p.m. following a speaking program with Mayor Michelle Wu. It\u2019ll arrive at the Common before 7 p.m., just in time for the early 7 o&#8217;clock fireworks (perfect for families of young ones).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The midnight fireworks will go off over Boston Harbor, and there will also be a brief pyrotechnic display over City Hall Plaza at midnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First Night was established on Dec. 31, 1976 by artist Clara Wainwright to provide Boston-area musicians and artists family-friendly places to play and exhibit for one night at venues across the city. The event has united the city for over 46 years, growing year by year \u2014 and in 2015, it was made completely free and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event\u2019s official schedule, including live music performances, will be announced in the coming weeks. Taking public transportation to and from downtown Boston is strongly recommended. Highlighting the similarities between looking at art and reading, \u201cWordplay\u201d shows how artists rely not just on images but also on words to convey \u2014 or change \u2014 their meanings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While words have played a role in art for centuries, \u201ctext art\u201d as a genre is a contemporary art concept, emerging with conceptual art of the \u201860s. The exhibit will feature works by pioneering artists like Jenny Holzer and Glenn Ligon, along with newer, never displayed acquisitions by artists like Kenturah Davis, Taylor Davis, Joe Wardwell, and Rivane Neuenschwander. Throughout the year and into 2025, visitors can look forward to viewing a new commission by South African artist Igshaan Adams; exhibitions by Dominican Republic-born and New York City-based Firelei B\u00e1ez and visual artist Charles Atlas; filmmaker Wu Tsang&#8217;s immersive video installation re-imagining Moby Dick; and the first solo museum exhibition of Tau Lewis&#8217;s found art pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The 2024 ICA schedule<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jan. 30, 2024 \u2013 Dec. 1, 2025 \u2014<\/strong>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icaboston.org\/exhibitions\/wordplay\/\">Wordplay<\/a>&#8221; <br>Drawing from the ICA&#8217;s permanent collection, Wordplay employs the role of text in visual expression within contemporary art. Exploring the decades-old use of &#8220;text art&#8221; to ask questions, express political messages, and connect to writers, and cultural icons, the exhibit boasts 35 works, including acquisitions on view for the first time by artists Lorna Simpson, Joe Wardwell, Zanele Muholi, and Rivane Neuenschwander.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Feb. 13, 2024 \u2013 Feb. 15, 2025<\/strong> <strong>\u2014<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icaboston.org\/exhibitions\/igshaan-adams\/\">Igshaan Adams<\/a><br>Commissioned for the ICA, &#8220;Lynloop [Toeing the Line]&#8221; is an example of how multidisciplinary artist Igshaan Adams\u2019 woven tapestries connect with his spirituality, family histories, and community narratives from his South African heritage. The exhibit draws on the notion of &#8220;desire lines,\u201d explained as those created by pedestrians when they move outside of designated walkways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Feb. 15 \u2013 Aug. 4, 2024 \u2014<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icaboston.org\/exhibitions\/wu-tsang-whales\/\">Wu Tsang&#8217;s &#8220;Of Whales&#8221;<\/a><br>Reimagining Herman Melville&#8217;s classic 1851 American novel\u00a0&#8220;Moby-Dick&#8221; from the perspective of the sperm whale, Wu Tsang invites viewers on a journey through the depths of a CGI ocean. Thanks to the Unity gaming platform, the real-time video installation loops continuously for a multisensorial experience of undersea life accompanied by a soundscape that fills the entire gallery.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Apr. 4 \u2013 Sep. 2, 2024 \u2014<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icaboston.org\/exhibitions\/firelei-baez-0\/\">Firelei B\u00e1ez<\/a><br>This is the museum\u2019s first survey dedicated to the richly intricate works of artist Firelei B\u00e1ez. The exhibition is 40 pieces strong, including new works as well as before-seen paintings, installations, and paper works that explore the Atlantic basin and its complicated (and often incomplete) history. The exhibit will also travel throughout North America to the Vancouver Art Gallery and Des Moines Art Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aug. 22, 2024 \u2013 Jan. 26, 2025 \u2014<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icaboston.org\/exhibitions\/tau-lewis\/\">Tau Lewis<\/a><br>Tau Lewis has created a new body of work for her first solo museum exhibition in the U.S.\u00a0\u00a0Through hand-sewing, carving, and plaster casting, the self-taught artist transforms found materials into intricately detailed soft sculptures, quilts, masks, and other items, all the while honoring &#8220;the transference of energy and emotion that occurs when an object is made by hand.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Oct. 10, 2024 \u2013 Mar. 16, 2025 \u2014 <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icaboston.org\/exhibitions\/charles-atlas\/\">Charles Atlas<\/a><br>Somewhere between moving image, dance, and performance, the intimate video portraits by pioneering interdisciplinary artist Charles Atlas come together at the ICA for his first U.S. museum survey. March 28 to April 7, 2024 and the DCU Center in Worcester from April 12-14, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A globally diverse cast of 75 performers from 18 countries will be led by Lauren Irving, Alex Stickels, and Jan Damm, who guide audiences through the interactive and immersive experience as Aria, Stix, and Nick Nack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expect never-before-seen stunts, such as The Triangular Highwire where performers balance on bikes and more on three 25-foot-tall wires connected in a triangular formation and The Double Wheel of Destiny, where acrobats perform back-and-forth leaps and somersaults &#8220;atop two simultaneously spinning apparatuses suspended 30 feet above the ground and moving at incredibly high speeds.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s more, trapeze artists&nbsp;will showcase high-flying skills on a Criss-Cross Trapeze, while others perform high-adrenaline extreme sports within The Ultimate Playground.
